| Dr Fan had found that many patients presented with advanced stages of oral cancer despite the presence of so many dental and medical clinics all throughout Singapore whereby patients can easily see a dentist or doctor and obtain an early diagnosis. He started the Mouth Cancer Awareness Week to help raise the awareness of this terrible disease with the hope of reducing deaths and morbidity of treatment of advanced oral cancers.
The programs within the week included radio talk show (938 live), TV talk shows (Good Morning Singapore Mandarin Channel, Channel NewsAsia), newspapers articles, education talks at NUH and community centres (eg Ang Mo Kio), free Oral Cancer screening clinics, NUH Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Open House, Oral cancer refresher talks to general dental /medical practitioners and nurses, multidisciplinary public forums ( surgeons, oncologists, dentists, speech therapists, nutritionists, physiotherapisst) to educate the public on oral cancer and its treatment by the different teams which had to be well coordinated for optimum outcome. |

The radio talkshow 938 Live had supported the Mouth Cancer Awareness week which started with the late Debra De Souza and now carried on by Daniel Martins. The show was well received and generated much public interest on mouth cancer which was previously unheard of. Dr Fan answered questions on oral cancer and its latest treatment and provided information on disturbing trends affecting young people in Europe and the US. |
| Public Forum: Mouth Cancer – Are you Growing One? – 13th November 2010 | |

The forum was a multidisciplinary informative session on mouth cancer on the early signs of oral cancer and its detection and treatment with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Various health professionals including the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, the radiotherapy doctor, the medical oncologist, the dental surgeon, the dietician and the speech and swallowing specialist, the physiotherapist lectured on a general overview of the effects of treatment of mouth cancer. The event was kindly supported by the Singapore Dental Association, Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (Singapore) and the College of Dental Surgeons, Academy of Medicine (Singapore) and sponsored by GSK in November 2010. |
